1. Enabled teams to identify various possible futures and evaluate possible responses to each situation.
2. Enabled managers and team leaders to identify individuals with strong “Peripheral Vision” and assign them projects of identifying, tracking
and monitoring weak signals in their respective markets
Following the workshop a shift in culture was felt necessary in the way business got conducted within the organization. HR took ownership to drive
these changes and the following steps were initiated
1. The workshop helped HR review JDs and KPIs of key market facing and customer facing positions and include “Peripheral Vision” as an
important Performance Indicator.
2. All sales and business meetings at plant, unit and area level meetings to have a short briefing on “Weak Signals” their possible outcomes.
3. Quarterly review meetings held at Corporate office to allocate a half an hour slot for reviewing “Weak Signals” in the overall and larger
business environment.
Learnings for L&D and next steps
The challenge that lies ahead for L&D at ACC Concrete is to ensure that the “Culture Shift” initiated by HR is implemented across the organization
with conclusive results. L&D aims to achieve this by measuring “Visible Shift in Perception” amongst key stake holders at regular intervals. This includes
measuring the following
1. Number of non - traditional customers identified and serviced
2. Number of potential competitors identified and their current market activities catalogued and analyzed
3. Number of non-conventional products which are used as substitutes for our products
L&D is assigned the responsibility to monitor areas / individuals who are able (and not able) to report incidents on the above three parameters. Based
on the performance indicator of individuals on these parameters, L&D is mandated to conduct further workshops and refresher sessions for continuous
improvement in this competency. As a next step and for areas and individuals not meeting up to organizational expectation on this parameter L&D is
assigned the responsibility of identifying “Thinking Biases” which obstruct this cultural shift and address them through suitable learning interventions.
Conclusion:
Driving skills whether on the road or in business depends very critically on Peripheral vision, that is one’s ability to anticipate the unexpected.
